Baby Shower

Filed under: Uncategorized — mvervinck @ 2:05 am

Today at work we had a baby shower for one of our female department colleagues.  It was nice to get together with everyone in the department.  It isn’t something that we get to do very often.  Our schedules are crazy, and we all meet with classes at different times.  We rarely get a chance to sit down, eat, chat and enjoy each other’s company.

As I was watching the guest of honor open her baby gifts, I began thinking about my own babies who are now teenagers and some of who are getting ready to go off to college.  Looking back, the time has flown, but then again, it hasn’t.  I began thinking of all of the changes which have occurred to me in my life, and it is amazing how different things are for me today compared to when I was the one smiling and opening all of the cute baby toy and baby clothes gifts.  Wow!  Back then, I was teaching in a different state in an elementary school and married to a different man.  Now, I teach adults in ‘the state up north’ and am married to a wonderful man who lets me be me.  Back then, I never dreamed of the changes that would occur to me in my life from the time my babies were babies until the time they became adults.  Not everything has been wonderful along the way, but where I am now is where I am suppose to be.

I wish to my colleague and her husband a wonderful life as they begin their journey with their baby.  I hope in 18 years, they have a chance to reflect on their own lives and look back fondly on where they are today.

  1. We had a baby shower at school for a colleague last week. She went to her dr. the next day, and he told her to change her FMLA…she needed to stay home and lower her stress level and her blood pressure. Things change fast! I have the same wishes for her you mentioned…well said.

    • I wish her the best! Teaching IS stressful in so many ways.

  2. This is baby season! One of our young teachers had a baby this weekend. She’s had a rough pregnancy and couldn’t wait for the baby to be here. Don’t think she knows she is in for at least 18 years of roller coaster riding!

  3. Life changes so rapidly in some ways. I felt so old when I learned I was teaching the son of one of my former elementary students. I enjoyed reading your reflection about your life as you raised your own family and the changes that you went through.
