17?!  Where did the time go?  Arriving home from work, I find that it is time to walk right out the door again.  The family (plus one extra child) is off to celebrate my youngest son’s birthday.  In our family, it is tradition for the birthday person to choose where they would like to go for their birthday dinner.  It is interesting to look back at all of the different restaurants we have been to depending on the child’s age, the special free dessert or fun-filled additional activities.  We have even stayed at home a time or two so that the birthday person could have exactly the special meal that he or she wanted prepared by mom.  Tonight we are off to a local burger and milkshake place.

Now, we don’t even ride in the same car anymore.  All of the kids are now drivers  always jockeying for the keys to the car, so of course, one is out and about visiting friends, but she still takes time to meet for her brother’s dinner.  We all meet at the restaurant, walk in and take a seat at the counter.  The interior of the restaurant is the same as it has been for the past 50 years.  The red stools around the counter stand out against the black and white checkerboard tile floor.  The menu is simple and we all order milkshakes, burgers to split and fries, some seasoned and some not.  As we wait, we talk.  We talk about lots of things from how the youngest two felt about the ACT test they took today at school to tax refunds to buying bowling jackets to driving in the snow to what plans were on for this evening.  Talking, laughing and teasing each other, those are things that have not changed even though the places were we are have changed throughout the years.

We all finish our meal, and we bundle up in our warm coats, mittens and scarves.  Trudging through the snow to the car, there is even more laughter, a few snowballs, and a lot of memories made; we drive home.

Guess it is time for cake and ice cream now!

Happy Birthday!

  1. What a warm atmosphere! It truly sounds like a loving family time that will be treasured long past this birthday!

  2. Oh fun! We have the same tradition – birthday person chooses the meal. We also have a 17 year old (our youngest) who took the ACT yesterday. Lots of similarities. It’s so nice to have evenings full of talk and laughter with those you love best.
