Winter Weather Warning?!

I know; I know.  Everyone complains about the weather when it snows after a few sunny days, so I guess this really isn’t a unique post in that regards.  Even with the possibility that this could be the snowiest winter on record if we could just get another 10 inches is not enough incentive to want or enjoy more snow this year.  I would happily settle with the title ‘Second Snowiest Winter on Record.’  I guess, though, it really isn’t my choice.

As I was listening to the weather forecast this morning, the weather forecaster was being teased by the others on the news show for showing his inner nerd side and for being happy about the current weather forecast.  He was genuinely happy about the snow!  (Although, in his profession probably discussing one sunny day after another is not too exciting, but I would prefer that forecast over the current 5 – 8 inches of snow forecast he just gave.)  This got me thinking about what things caused my inner nerd to show.  I am teased quite a bit by my family, friends and students about my chosen field of study – linguistics.  My inner nerd shows quite a bit sometimes, too!  For example, I have been caught listening to how people say things or particular words being used instead of keeping up my end of a conversation. Also, in my family if someone says something that they did not mean to say like, “Are my doors in the key?”  I will jump in and analyze their slip of the tongue error. (That’s a metathesis error.)  After all, language is used everywhere, and there are lots of topics in regards to language to analyze and dissect.  Yup, my inner nerd shows up quite a bit!

Then again, I bet everyone has an inner nerd that shows up at least once in a while.  What about you?  Is there a topic or something that causes your inner nerd to show up?  If so, what?
